Awareness, mitigation and innovation

Bunge Brasil also promotes a series of activities aimed at mitigating the environmental impacts of its products and services. The company requires homologation of its raw material suppliers, demands chemical analyses of these raw materials to check for heavy metals, and forms partnerships with universities and research and extension institutes to disseminate best agricultural practices aimed at fertilizers.

The Company promotes, in partnership with various NGOs, a number of education and consumer awareness programs on the correct disposal of packaging and other waste materials. The Company invests in research in order to develop new biodegradable materials, such as the packaging used in its Cyclus margarine, the only one of its kind in the market, and an initiative that has won awards in Brazil and abroad.

The Cyclus packaging is made from (PLA) polylactic acid resin, a plastic material obtained from the fermentation of corn starch and an innovative product in the Brazilian market, which is degradable in up to 180 days under adequate conditions of composting, and does not contaminate the soil or threaten the growth of plants, animals or microorganisms. This product uses between 20% and 50% less fuel than conventional packaging production processes, and complies with the norms set down by the ABNT (Brazilian Association of Technical Norms). This packaging also fulfills European and US requirements and has been certified by the BPI (Biodegradable Products Institute), in the US, which has classed it as being environmentally friendly.

In order to promote the proper use of fertilizers, Bunge offers precision agriculture services, a technology that identifies the ideal dosage of fertilizer that should be applied according to each agricultural region. Customers in this area also receive, from Bunge, recommended fertilizer application and soil correction services, based on scientific parameters and conscientious use, as well as investments in environmental protection, education and training. The Company is also involved in the development of organic-based products, in order to replace products of a mineral and fossil origin.
